Steps to getting your security license
To work as a security guard in Alberta, you are required to have a license. The process of getting your security license can seem daunting, but with the right steps, it can be easy and straightforward. Here are the steps you need to take to get your license.
First, you will need to enrol a security training course (Alberta Basic Security Training -ABST). This course will give you the basic knowledge needed to work as a security guard.
Next, Begin your background check. This will ensure that you do not have any criminal convictions that would disqualify you from working as a security guard.
Finally, take the licensing exam. This test will assess your knowledge of security guard duties and practices
We have put the steps together for you in an easy check list. This list below covers everything you need and the recommend order.
1. Start your police background check
This process may take as long as 3 weeks to complete. It is strongly recommended you begin this process right away, in order to have all your documents as soon as possible.
2. Enrol and Begin your Alberta Basic Security Training
The security training in Alberta is a minimum of 40-hours of training. This is why it is recommended you begin your police background check before your training. This allows you to complete the course while you are waiting for he background check to arrive.
3. Get a passport Sized Photo
You will need a passport sized photo of yourself. This is required when you submit all your documents, as this photo will be used for your security license.
4. Write your security exam.
Now that you have completed your security training, you will not need to write your security exam. Once you have completed your final exam, you will receive documents to demonstrate your success on passing the security training process.
5. Submit your completed security license application
At this stage your should now have the following
Police Background Check
Proof of Security Training
Passport Sized Photo
Completed Security Application
With all of these documents, you can go to a participating Alberta Registry office to submit your application package, pay the license fee.
6.Your now have your security license
You are now ready to work within the Alberta Security Industry
