How To Get Your Security License - A step by step guide

Updated: Nov 26, 2020

One of the top questions we get is "How to I Get My Alberta Security License?"

We thought it would be helpful to breakdown the steps into the most efficient process with the fastest turn around time. That means, less hassle for you and you begin working sooner.

1. Find a Training Provider

There are a number of quality training provider available in both online and in-person learning options.

Not all training providers are equal, do your home work and look around a little. Once you register with a training provider that meets your preferred method of learning and delivery, then you can proceed to step 2.

2. Get Your Passport Sized Photo

You are wanting to get a passport sized photo. Make sure that the company you choose to take the photo does not stamp the back of the photo. You only need the size on the stamp.

3. Get Your Police Background Check and Photo Signed

This is the most time consuming part of the process. If you followed the above steps, then the rest will be a smooth outcome. Go to your local police station (during COVID-19, possibly online). When you request your Background and Vulnerable sector check, you will also want the police officer to sign your photo.

4. Completing Your Training and your Proctored Exam.

As the police background check can take a few weeks to arrive (depending on which city you live in), you are going to want to use that time to complete your training and write your exam. Often your training provider will organize your exam. If you do not have an exam proctor or unable to attend your scheduled exam, we recommend Integrity Proctoring Services as a possible exam option.

5. Complete Your Security License Application From

At this stage, you should have the following:

  • Signed Passport Sized Photo

  • Completed Police Background Check

  • Proof of Successfully Passing Proctored Security Exam

  • All Personal Documents as outlined in Alberta Security Application Form

With the above organized, you can now take your application to a participating Alberta Registry office, to get a same-day temporary Alberta Security License.

Note On Post Secondary Education
